Pension Indexation (
National Pensions Index (
The table presents the figure point valid on 1 January each year. The comparison to the previous year is rounded to two decimals. TEL index / TEL halfway index
This index under the Employees' Pensions Act is used to revalue the earnings based on which the pension is calculated according to the rules that were in force until 2004. The index is used to adjust the pension that is calculated based on the insured person’s earnings or confirmed income from self-employment up to 2004. From 1962 to 1976, the TEL index was linked only to the wage-level index. As of 1977, the TEL half-way index was applied. The halfway index is also used during the transition period after the 2005 pension reform. That is why it is also known as the transitional index. The table presents the point figures of the halfway index until the year 2013, when it was confirmed for the last time.
Earnings-related pension index
The earnings-related pension index is used to adjust all earnings-related pensions in payment as of 2005. Before 2005, the index was called the index for persons of retirement age. It separated from the TEL halfway index in 1995, when the point figure of both indexes was 1712. The table does not present the index figures projected in July, which were applied in from 1977 to 1984.
Wage coefficient
The wage coefficient is used when calculating the pension to adjust the insured person’s wages or self-employed person’s confirmed income as of 2005. The value of the index in 2004 was 1.000.
National pensions index
The national pensions in payment are adjusted each year by the Social Insurance Institution of Finland (Kela) with the national pensions index (also called the Kela index). The table presents the point figure valid on 1 January each year, although the national pensions index could be adjusted several times each year before 1985.
The National Pensions Index is normally adjusted once a year, but year 2022 an additional adjustment was made for the period 1 August 2022 to 31 December 2022.
